Approach to Individual Therapy

Roshan characterizes her psychotherapeutic approach as primarily cognitive-behavioral. In cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), the client and therapist explore and identify challenging negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress or psychological issues. The core principle of CBT is that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, and that by investigating and thus altering negative thought patterns and maladaptive behaviors, we can influence our emotions and improve our mental well-being.

Roshan’s cognitive-behavioral approach is further supplemented by humanistic and evolutionary perspectives. Whilst humanistic perspectives infuse our lives with meaning and purpose, evolutionary perspectives allow us to understand (and thus de-shame us from) the biological origins of our emotions, instincts, and cognitions.  Roshan aims for her clients to feel secure and unreserved in discussing any matter so that they can freely navigate and explore challenges.  Her therapeutic interests include anxiety and depression, eating disorders, relationship satisfaction, self-esteem, goal setting, interpersonal conflict, and grief.

Roshan has grown up and lived in Afghanistan, Austria, the Czech Republic, Mozambique, South Africa, Sudan, and the United States. This international experience has helped her appreciate the psychological realities and diversities of different cultures.

She practices in English, German, and Farsi.
